Important Information Regarding Safe Handling of Insulation

Why Insulation Work Should Be Left To Professionals

Insulation work should be left to professionals as it can be dangerous to work with some types of insulation and without an understanding of the danger of asbestos. You can read more about this in: Your Guide to Hiring an Asbestos Abatement Company.

At C&K we have years of experience with insulation removal. Our professional team can safely remove and properly dispose of your old insulation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Insulation

How much does it cost to install insulation in an attic?

Depending on the type of insulation used, it can cost anywhere from $1 to $7 per square foot. Contact us to get a FREE ESTIMATE with no obligation!

Do I need to remove old insulation before installing new?

Removing old insulation before adding new isn’t usually necessary unless it’s been damaged by fire, mould or rodent infestation. If it appears wet, we recommend making sure that whatever caused the water damage has been fixed prior to adding the new insulation.

Can you put plywood over blown insulation?

You can put plywood over blown insulation as long as it doesn’t compress the insulation, which may reduce its effectiveness.

How do you get around the attic with blown insulation?

Walking through blown in insulation will displace where the insulation has been laid, and can cause the insulation to become less effective.

If you absolutely must walk through the insulation, we recommend wearing face protection to avoid breathing in particles. Boards can be laid across the joists to walk to where you need to go. This will prevent damage to the ceiling.

How long does blown in insulation last?

Blown in fibreglass insulation can last up to 100 years under optimal conditions, however it’s recommended that you have it checked after 25 years.

Is blown in fibreglass insulation safe?

When installed properly by a professional, it’s considered quite safe. Since fibreglass is made of small particles of glass, it doesn’t absorb water or burn, however, when handled it can cause irritations to the skin and eyes, as well as make it’s way into your lungs. We recommend that you wear full protective clothing, including a protective mask and gloves before coming into contact with it.

Which is better, cellulose or fibreglass blown in insulation?

In comparison, there are pros and cons for each. While the cost of installation is relatively the same, cellulose insulation is more likely to break down over time and need to be replaced sooner because it’s made from paper and absorbs moisture when it rains.

Are there any government rebates for insulation?

There are currently three types of rebates being offered by the government in order to increase energy efficiency and to reduce the effects of climate change. You can find more information about this under Rebates For Insulation Upgrades.

Does Ontario have rebates for attic insulation?

You can apply for a Home Efficiency Rebate when you schedule a home energy assessment through Enbridge Gas. To find out more information about the process, follow the link under Rebates For Insulation Upgrades.

How do you get the Green Energy Rebate for insulation?

In order to qualify, homeowners must work with a professional contractor and conduct the EnerGuide evaluation prior to purchasing and installing insulation. You can find more information about this and other rebates under Rebates For Insulation Upgrades.
